Ok, On another post i read someone (AuntyM) saying "wait" " these are Springers" If i'm anchored and using plastic (Kwikfish) or metal (Alvins, Brads, Simon's) with trebles, If a fish hits it's either ON or OFF, No question, When fishing the Willamette, trolling I use a "Rogue style" bait holder, single hook at head...and at least #2 treble at tail, I caught a springer the other night and when it hit...clicker sing'n...i grabbed my pole...no question ...it was on..released it. I read a column in a local paper....This writer said when he released his fish it had swallowed it so far they had to clip the leader...i think he waited TOO long. Winter,Spring,Summer or Fall....Just set the hook if they call :p

Hardware, No waiting, (for me). Bait...Wait???
And don't be afraid \:\( To say Why you "wait"

AuntyM, It's the kind of baitholder with the spinner on top..maybe it's just the name ....but it's described as Rogue style, To be honest i've never seen the rotory thingy.....I've never anchored up and used herring but i have with spinner/prawn.....i'm sure it would work great....just let the current do the work for you right?? But IMO, if i am using a treble for the trailing hook i don't have to worry about waiting.

Thanks \:\)

Yes...you'd better wait...that water is still very cold

The real reason one waits is that your boat mates will be impressed as you saunter up to the pole and casually set the hook.

Or, that's what i've been told. I have trouble with the sauntering part.

When plunking for springers on the Upper Columbia, it's customay to not even pick up the rod until line is peeling off the rod:)! I fought this for a long time until I learned from the pros. Now it's a casual stroll over to the rod, pick it up, reel down, (meanwhile this friggin king is just chompin' & hammerin' your rod) and give a HUGE hookset. Gets em' 80%of the time, but it's hard to train the mind of a drift fisherman to do this. It's such a crappy feeling to "swing & miss" while the whole hog line is watching the action \:\) !

Now with plugs, we're not quite so cavalier, but if he's "there", he'll stay there for a while.

Kings are eaters, and I'd sooner have them strip the bait by waiting to long, rather than screw up the bite myself by setting the hook to early (my same philosophy applies to blackjack-Don't beat yourself).

Thanks for the replies... guys \:\) I guess it doesn't really matter that much as long as the end result is Positive I walked into Fishermans's tonight in the middle of a clinic put on by Lance F. The first words i heard were something about not touching that rod...let that fish chomp on the bait...( I wanted to scream "SET THE HOOK"!! ) but i I know my honest...alternative "opinion" can get me into trouble....And they did have extra security in the house  so i kept my big mouth shut. Most of the time i'm not paying any attention to my rod...so by the time i see it go off...it's time to pick it up anyway......

Thanks,

Louis F.

I don't think you even need a huge hookset. I give it a short sharp pump, and that's enough to do the deed. If the rod is bent over the way it should be, the hook is likely already set.

You want to make sure that you get that one pump in, without losing tension on the line. I have one friend who has this loop in his swing, causing him to shake off more than his share as slack gets into the line.
